Jorus C’baoth, Outbound Flight (novel)

Guide Introduction:
The purpose of this guide is to give potential and current Sentinel players a good foundation to build on.   It will focus base mechanics and gameplay up to level 20.  It will not cover skill tree builds.  An advanced guide will follow this one that will analyze the different skill trees in the class.

Those who have played World of Warcraft will remember that crafters were able to link their entire crafting list into the chat window for potential customers to browse.  A feature that is extremely useful for themselves and other players to facilitate trade.  A feature that seems to be missing in The Old Republic.

Except it is in the game, from a certain point of view.  While linking a crafting skill to chat might not be in the game, there is still a way to view the schematic list of another player.  Just target the player who will be doing the crafting and right click on their portrait.  Scroll to “Additional Commands” on the window that pops up, and a second window will appear.  This window allows players to inspect each other, add friends, ignore others or report spammers, and last but not even close to least, View Schematics.  Click on that one, and the crafter’s schematic window opens for perusal.

Gamespy recently got a chance to talk to Daniel Erickson about a myriad of topics that include story elements, IP choices and dark side and light side choices. Here’s a quick blurb, but make sure you read the whole interview over at Gamespy.

GameSpy: When people are playing through, and I’m assuming you’re seeing a bunch of usage statistics at this point, are you seeing that people are sticking mostly to a light side path or a dark side path? Or are people mixing it up and going both ways?

Daniel Erickson: We see people mix it up a bit. People primarily settle down. You tend to see a little bit more experimentation in the first couple worlds. In fact, we have quests in there, the one on Hutta being probably the one people notice the most, but we have quests throughout the game, on the original worlds, that we call our “test and tempt” quests. Which are: Okay, if you’re going dark side, let’s see whether or not you can really do something brutally dark side. If you’re going light side, we’re going to keep throwing a few things at you to see what might break you off that. Are you still going to go light side if romance is dark side? Are you still going to go light side if there’s really good loot on the dark side? Are you still going to go light side if there’s something that sounds really fun on the dark side? It’s interesting to see, on both sides. We can pretty well guess, usually, if somebody is going one direction and then will stop, which quests will turn them.

Do you ever have problems targeting an enemy with tab in the middle of a fight? Are you often attempting to find a target only to have to cycle through three or four targets before you get to the right one? These issue plague a lot of players, just not in SWTOR, but in many games. In any frantic PVP match, precise targeting is key to victory.

There is a keybind in the game, defaulted to ALT-C, that targets the closest enemy to the center of the screen. Today’s Pro-Tip is to rebind Tab to this function for better targetting, and then rebind your typical cycling tab target to a modifier of Tab like CTRL-Tab.

May you always target true!

We’re looking at this.

A few general notes on challenging fights.

One of the most important aspects of higher level fights against elites is to counter their special abilities. You are required to use your interrupting abilities (e.g. Distraction on the Imperial Agent) in these fights to prevent these enemies from gaining the upper hand. In the short term, stuns and ballistic attacks/knockback will also help, but your interrupt abilities have the added benefit of preventing the target from using their special abilities.

Make sure your companion is properly equipped and that their signature abilities are enabled. For example, if you rely on your companion to take the brunt of the beating in a fight, make sure their ‘defensive stance’ is activated. Turn off their area of effect abilities when you’re fighting single enemies – they are not efficient for these fights. You can enable/disable abilities by opening your companion panel (~ by default) and right clicking the ability. The green indicator on an ability tells you if a companion will consider the ability for use in their AI rotation.

Do not underestimate the benefit of stims and relics as short term efforts to turn the tide. Same goes for your 20 minute ‘heroic moment’ ability (the one that only works with your companion and triggers the music).

This sounds obvious, but make sure that your skill points (k) are distributed and that you’ve trained primary your abilities to level.

Finally, if all else fails, gaining additional equipment, levels or bringing a friend along to help with a challenging fight can be used to overcome temporary blocks. However, be advised that if you run into constantly very challenging fights, it is a good indication that your equipment might need updating.

All these notes aside, we are looking at difficulty issues constantly. If we find a trend that indicate a certain fight is broken or a specific advanced class has issues, we will act accordingly. If you want to provide additional insights, such as your character’s spec, your approach to combat, your companion or a particular fight you would like us to look at, please feel free to do so in this thread.

regards
Georg

SWTOR Synthweaving 101

The Synthweaving crew skill is another one of the six crafting crew skills that you can learn while adventuring in SWTOR. The SWTOR official site says that Synthweaving is “the art of creating lighter outfits and armors that are imbued with supernatural qualities.” However, it’s important to note that synthweavers also make heavy armor. Continue reading after the break to learn more about what makes the synthweaver such a valuable crew skill and to see if this is the crafting skill for you.

Today’s Pro-Tip is a quick one for those space jockeys out there. If you’re just starting your Space Combat career you might be used to holding down the mouse button to fire off your blasters repeatedly, even if you don’t have an enemy on your screen. Soon after starting, you will start equipping your ship with Class 1 modules that include shields.

Here’s the Pro-Tip, your shields will not regenerate as long as you are firing your blasters. So if you don’t have a target, lay off the left mouse button and get your shields back to full!

Laura Shot Third

On Wednesday, there was a Q&A session held over Reddit with Star Wars: The Old Republic’s Senior Community Manager, Stephen Reid. You can read the entire transcript here on FORCE Junkies or on Reddit. A wide range of topics was covered. Even though the interview didn’t reveal a lot of new information, there was one question and answer that especially caught my eye.

Stephen Reid shot over to Reddit today for an Ask Me Anything and he was answering questions like crazy. Topics from dual spec, same sex romances to combat responsiveness and UI customization (coming soon!).

Hey Reddit people, ask me some questions! I’m the Senior Community Manager for Star Wars: The Old Republic, based at BioWare in Austin. I manage the entire Community team, working on everything from Forums to social media, fansites to guild outreach, events to website content.

A few caveats:

  • I’m not in charge of any design decisions on the game – if you are looking to get something changed, ask nicely on the official Forums :)
  • I’m not aware of every single bug in the game, or the status of their resolution – although I am happy to hear about them
  • I am British and likely to use dry humor (but note: I spell things American now)
  • I am going into a meeting titled ” “THE AWESOME ATTACK OF RAINBOWS AND NARWHALS AND BACON THAT WE’RE GOING TO HIT THE BLOG WITH” right now, so I’ll be 30 minutes or more late before I start answering stuff…

That said… go for it.

Keep reading for the full transcript.

Ever wonder where you can buy PVP Gear and what commendations do what? Do you know what a Champion Set is versus a Battlemaster Set? If you want a quick shakedown of how the whole system works then keep reading!

You can buy Merc tokens with WZ tokens at a 3:1 ratio. You can buy a champion gear bag with 200WZ + 200 Merc. That bag is unique and you can’t open it till 50. The level 50 PvP daily lets you choose a Champion bag or a Battlemaster bag. The Battlemaster bag is unique and you can’t buy it. You also can’t open it without a very high valor rating.

So you can’t stockpile any of the bags because they are unique. If you aren’t 50 yet then you should buy merc badges till you have 1000. After that buy lvl 40/50 blue gear or go back to questing. You need high valor level in the end though so you can keep pvping for xp if you want.

Keep reading after the break for a quick and easy breakdown.

As players travel around the galaxy, chances are they will notice their companions’ reactions to conversation choices. These reactions are presented as a score termed Affection, but what exactly does it do? What if a companion hates the players choices? Companions can seem just as confusing as real world people, but it doesn’t take much to crack their code and find the answers.

Companion affection can effect game play in several ways which have varied appeal to different play styles. Crafters will notice that as their companion’s affection goes up, they become more efficient at crew skills. Companions will complete missions and craft items approximately 1% faster for every 750 affection they’ve gained. It’s been mentioned that affection also increases a companion’s crit chance or decreases their failure rate, but so far this has not been confirmed.

In case you have tried to dare the dangers of The Esseles on your own as a level 34 Bounty Hunter, then you don’t know what you’re missing! In Star Wars: The Old Republic, once you out level a round of mobs and they go “grey” to you, it is almost impossible for you to die to them. What this allows you to do is go back and solo older Flashpoints that you haven’t seen without any risk at all.

The level difference between NPCs and yourself is so great that you end up resisting and dodging most of their attacks. If you are even higher level, the NPC’s don’t even aggro unless you run very close to them.

Now you might ask, “Why would I want to do this?” Well there are two reasons and the first is that you can go back and easily farm older instances for those pieces of Orange Gear that you really liked the look of. The second reason is that you can be a really good friend and run your friends through them for a quick trip for equipment!
